Student Managers

Student managers for each sports program are critical to the daily operations and success of each team. Further, these positions provide employment opportunities for Pitt State students who are interested in athletics and/or have financial need. These individuals provide assistance with laundry, filming, equipment care and maintenance, practice set-up and they travel with teams and provide assistance in various ways on road trips. For years, student managers have been identified through a variety of ways, but the athletics department has now launched a more formal identification and employment program, modeled after the student manager program at the University of Kansas. Partial sponsorships of this program are available or sponsorship of the entire program is available as well.

Students may apply for the program through the Office of Career Services March-May each year. A “pool” of prospective student managers is identified through this application process and each applicant must agree to work selected summer camps in at least one sport as part of their “tryout” (application) process. There is no payment for working camps, but housing and meals are provided. Managers for the upcoming academic year are selected based on interviews, performance and work ethic in the camp setting, sports knowledge and career interests, and financial need. Successful applicants are assigned to sport programs by the Director of Athletics in consultation with head coaches. Student managers are under the supervision of the Director of Operations and each head coach. They may also be asked to “substitute” from time to time in other sports as well. Pitt State student managers must remain enrolled throughout the academic year in a minimum full-time program of studies and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

Successful applicants receive the following benefits:

  • $1,000 scholarship ($500 each semester) applied toward tuition and fees;
  • $1,500 in an annual stipend (paid monthly August-May) to assist with incidental expenses;
  • Access to the Athletics Academic Center; and
  • Team travel and equipment

Up to 12 positions are available each year. Freshmen and sophomores are strongly encouraged to apply and are eligible for re-appointment and such re-appointments determine the available positions open each year for new applicants. Positions are allocated as follows based on the number of student-athletes per program:

Football – 3 positions
Track – 3 positions
Men’s Basketball – 1 position
Women’s Basketball – 1 position
Baseball – 1 position
Softball – 1 position
Volleyball – 1 position
Equipment Room – 1 position

Total cost of the entire program is $35,000 annually and partial and full sponsorships of the program are available. Sponsorship of the program may be in the form of a gift provided to the PSU Foundation which is 100% tax-deductible or advertising and other benefits may be included as part of the sponsorship, which does reduce the tax deductibility portion of the gift.
